Abstract:
The paper presents a basic theoretical calculation of total neutron inelastic scattering. Neutrons in the energy range from 0 to 0.5 MeV are assumed to be bombarding a Au197 nucleus, resulting in the inelastic scattering. Using Hauser and Feshbach theory, and assuming a statistical distribution of levels of the compound state, inelastic neutron scattering cross sections are calculated. A nuclear optical model with a simple complex potential is used in calculating the transmission coefficients.
