Abstract
Vertical integration by retail food outlets affects trends in private branding. It transforms dual-brand manufacturers into single item producers who must recover lost sales. The effects on manufacturers who produce only private labels can be catastrophic. Lastly, manufacturers who produce exclusively branded items must face competitors who possess the power to practice unfair competitive activities. In general, manufacturers should refrain from depending on private label sales and concentrate on developing proprietary products.
