Abstract

This paper addresses the issue of the etiology of certain diseases believed to be caused by an imbalance in the TH1/TH2 immune system. Various databases were used to search for the studies cited in this review of literature and the allocation of research divided into either the TH1 or TH2 category. Overall, the studies presented in this paper support the premise that many diseases of the auto-immune or allergy categories seem to have an etiology stemming from an immune system that is skewed to either the TH1 or TH2 arm. Furthermore, other research has showed that by using different substances to modulate the overactive arm or to up-regulate the suppressed arm, the clinical symptoms of the disease can be improved or decreased. Although many of the studies done were performed on mice, this research can be a helpful tool in the management of these diseases in the human population.
