Abstract
This paper investigates the current situation of Austria's nationalized steel industry. It begins with a brief history of steel production in Austria, and the importance of the steel industry to the country is shown. It then compares the Austrian industry with those of other steel producing countries, in order to find reasons for operational difficulties. Factors considered ares 1) structure, 2) capacity and utilization, 3) competitiveness, as influenced by geographical location, labor and technology, and productivity, and 4) financial condition.
