Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of the beneficial effects of the traditional Mediterranean diet (TMD) on various diseases of aging, which could contribute to improved longevity. Special attention was given to whether these benefits could be replicated in populations outside of the Mediterranean basin. Basic Procedures: PubMed was used as the primary database for research. The search for information focused on studies linking the Mediterranean diet and its basic components to risk and incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and diseases of cognitive decline, as they each contribute to the aging process. Preference was given to studies published within the last 20 years. Main Findings: Adherence to a Mediterranean style diet (TMD) shows correlations to decreased risk and incidence of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and disorders of cognitive impairment in various populations and cross-cultural studies. Polyphenols represent antioxidant compounds common in the traditional diet of the Mediterranean and are likely responsible for this protective and preventive effect associated with the dietary practices. Principle Conclusions: The TMD consists of nutrient-dense, mainly plant-source foods, with high consumption of legumes, fruits, eggs, wholes grains, olive oil and fish, resulting in a diet high in fiber and low in the consumption of meat products and refined carbohydrates. Alcohol is consumed in moderation, especially in the form of wine. The antioxidant effects of polyphenols consumed in this diet are in part responsible for its protective effects on the various aging processes.
