Abstract
The current and past history of the Iranian agricultural economy is reviewed and the basic problems identified based on the two objectives of maximizing farm revenues and making Iran independent of foreign imports of food. A linear program is formulated based on two sets of constraints: immobile - confined to regions and mobile - applicable to the total nation. The main constraints are water, land and labor. The linear program is worked out using available data and estimates for two crops, tea and rice, in four different spatial regions. A sensitivity analysis is made of the effect of price changes on the product mix and the sensitivity of the optimal solution to changes in national and regional resource levels. A systems analysis is carried out to illustrate how trade-off analyses can be carried out aiming land improvement, water resource improvement and labor resource improvement to move to a new optimum, Extensive use is made of a cost model, developed in this paper, and the agricultural production functions.
