Abstract

The Distribution System Analysis Program (DSAP) is a computer program that has been developed by Northeast Utilities and is used by distribution planners and design engineers for evaluation and analysis of radial distribution systems. The program consists of several subroutines which contain all the mathematical equations necessary to study the operation of the system. These subroutines are referred to as load flow analysis, fault analysis. capacitor planning, voltage dip study and load growth study. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate and to verify the extent of accuracy of the calculations of the above subroutines. To reach this goal, several sample cases are constructed and analyzed under various operating conditions. In each case, the hand-calculated results are compared against the computer results and if there is a noticeable difference the area of error is indicated. If necessary, a computer flow chart which consists of minimum alteration of existing programming, is suggested for solution. The thesis consists of seven chapters, chapter 1 is an introduction to the structure of distribution systems. mainly radial systems. Chapter 2 defines the basic power equations and discusses the real, reactive and complex powers in single-phase and three-phase systems. Chapter 3 is an introduction to computer application in distribution system analysis, DSAP in particular. It explains the program characteristics and the data base. Chapters 4 through 7 represent a detailed discussion of the mathematical procedures used in load flow analysis, fault analysis, capacitor planning, flicker study and load growth study subroutines respectively and verify the accuracy of calculations of these subroutines.
