Abstract
Plants with mind-altering properties have made it possible for man to experience another plane of existence, and to see beyond what our conscious minds can fathom. The utilization of plants as therapeutic medicines is an ancient tradition far older than any contemporary science. Psychedelics are the most powerful psychiatric medicines and spiritual sacraments known to mankind. Currently there are no formally trained therapists legally permitted to use them in practice, and the available underground psychedelics are of variable quality. The goal of this review is to examine the potential use of psychedelics in healing, the therapeutic relationship, and spiritual development in order to demonstrate that further research on the topic is necessary and training for future practitioners is warranted. A thorough examination of their history and their use in research is necessary to understand their true potential. This literature review illustrates that psychedelics offer great promise as tools for treating medical disorders and addictions, as end of life therapies, and as enhancements to the psychotherapeutic process.
