Abstract
Eleven selected characteristics (Age, Sex, Math, Science, English, History, Activities, Veteran Status, Marital Status, Employment, and Relocation) of students entering the Data Processing Program at Greater New Haven State Technical College were analyzed. The assessment of these data led to specific recommendations to Greater New Haven State Technical - College for the purpose of imp roving student selection procedures, in Data Processing. Improved selection procedures were expected’ to lower attrition and save unnecessary expenditures of both capital and human resources. The economic aspects of a high attrition rate in the Data Processing Program at Greater New Haven State Technical College affect not only the students enrolled in the program, but the Connecticut taxpayer as well. In the political arena programs are established on the basis of need, with a reasonable expectation that the program established will fulfill that need. State Technical College administrators are also accountable to the system of higher education as well as the students in their programs. The human dimension is another factor affected by a high attrition rate. Unsuccessful students suffer the stigma of failure as well as losing valuable time which could have been best applied elsewhere. Taking all these aspects into consideration, State Technical College presidents and administrators have expressed a serious concern about this extremely high attrition rate among Data Processing students. Permission was granted by the President of Greater New Haven State Technical College to examine the records of students in the Data Processing Department in the hope that the attrition problem can be addressed with practical solutions.
