Abstract
Alexithymic characteristics, mood, locus of control and ulcer activity of older ulcer patients were assessed. The TAS was found not to correlate with the APRQ, suggesting a significant difference in the assessment of alexithymia by clinical interview or self-report scale. A trend toward significant correlation was observed between alexithymia and low internal locus of control. When the two groups of ulcer patients with active and inactive ulcers were compared, the peptic ulcer group with active ulcers had significantly higher external locus of control which was not attributable to confounding variables. The groups did not differ on measures of alexithymia, internal or chance locus of control. Even though a direct association between alexithymia and medical outcome was not demonstrated, it is suggested that alexithymic ulcer patients exhibit maladaptive illness attitudes.
