Abstract
The need for a research institute at a teaching University is examined, together with the financial requirements to support such an activity. The history of the Institute for Anguilliform Research and Mariculture is reviewed, the importance of the planning process is described, and the program carried out from 1974 - 1978 is summarized. The role of public relations and the significance of the Institute's impact on the community is stressed, as is the contribution which the Institute has made to the status of the University as a leader in a specialized scientific field. Future prospects for the Institute are outlined with recommendations of actions required to ensure its long-term success.
