Abstract
Higher education is essential to help nurses think critically and solve problems. To address patient complexity, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) established a target of 80% Bachelor's prepared nurses by 2020, which has not been fulfilled. We currently have a registered nurse shortage and diversity deficit. The underestimated LPN workforce can bridge the diversity gap and meet the requirement for more BSN-prepared nurses. The first part of this research examined hurdles that impede LPNs from pursuing higher education and determined the driving reasons for attaining an RN licensure. The second part will be to establish a cost-effective LPN to BSN pathways to help LPNs accomplish this objective by fostering a seamless transition. LPNs were not obtaining credit for past courses or experience, expense, and family demands where the top three barriers identified during the review of literature. This study examined Connecticut (CT) LPNs' motivations and barriers to returning to school to get their BSN.
