Abstract
I first began my research on the double in Dostoevsky and Conrad because I was interested in exploring the ways in which these two men of letters viewed the divided self and gave expression to it in their writing. At the time I planned to include at least four major works by each author. During the course of my study, I began to realize that delving into even seven or eight major works was still too ambitious an undertaking, given the restrictions of time. Therefore, I attempted to strike a compromise. I limited the scope of this paper to one obvious example of doubleness by each author, Dostoevsky's The Double and Conrad's "The Secret Sharer," and to one additional work which could be interpreted as such. Much to my regret, I was unable to give each work equal emphasis. I did not set out to prove any particular thesis about the use of the double by Dostoevsky and Conrad. What I hoped to show was that the double is a recurring theme and appears in a great variety of literature.
