Abstract

Objective – The purpose of this literature review was to evaluate the scientific validity and application of symptothermal fertility awareness method as a form of contraceptive. This paper briefly examines the physiology of fertility of both male and females and respective hormones, as well as how to monitor and interpret symptoms of the female body which directly correlate to these hormonal shifts. Basic Procedures – The primary resource used was the book entitled Taking Charge of your Fertility by Toni Weschler MPH. Supplemental research was found through PubMed, UptoDate.com and Ebsco online databases. Papers primarily focused on human physiology of fertility as well as monitoring symptoms of fertility. Papers chosen were published within the last twenty years. Main Findings – The fertility awareness method is scientifically sound as the hormones in the body which promote fertility are directly correlated with symptoms of the female body throughout the biphasic fertility cycle. Thus by becoming aware of the symptom thermal methods of fertility awareness a couple can prevent conception by applying this knowledge alone. Principal Conclusions – The Fertility Awareness Method of contraception is aligned with naturopathic principles and thus naturopathic physicians should be well informed of this effective and scientifically sound method.
