Abstract

In order to help promote recycling in homes and create a safe way in order to recycle cans, the idea of the Can Crusher was created. The Can Crusher itself is a device that crushes and stores cans in a storage unit that can then be emptied and cleaned when it becomes full. This is done by using an actuator that pushes the piston head into the front of the can, crushing it as it hits the wall on the back end of the can. With the can being crushed into a smaller size, there is an opening at the bottom of where the can rests. It then falls through the opening into the storage unit at the bottom of the device where it is stored. After the storage unit becomes full, there is a door that can be opened at the end of the device that allows the user to dispose of the crushed cans. The device also has safety measures in consideration, including the kill-switch feature. This does not allow the device to operate when the can loading door is open. The speed in which the can is crushed is also reduced in order to ensure no fingers or objects are in the way. There is also a plexiglass shield that ensures the debris from the crushed can does not fly out and harm the user. The protective shield is transparent, and allows the user to see the device in action and when the storage is full.
