Abstract

In this thesis, first of all, the reasons for Poe's choice of "the loss of a beautiful woman" as his subject matter are discussed in Chapter I. Chapter II is devoted to a brief explication of the four stories and of the gradual and chronological development of his subject matter. Chapter III tries to find the answers to these questions: What is the obsession of the narrators? Who is the woman and what does she mean? Why is she always connected with "death" imagery? How are the woman and the narrator related to each other? What is the theme of the story? Chapter IV investigates Poe's technique to present his theme in the form of the story, and seeks answers to the final question: how do these techniques work?
