Abstract

Multiple studies show that despite the proliferation of “text” in our lives, year to year, Americans read less. They consume fewer books for leisure or information (Gallup). In 2019, only 37 percent of American twelfth-grade students were academically prepared for reading in college, though 61% planned to attend a four-year institution (NEAP). Average literary text comprehension scores were lower overall. U.S. students are losing ground in main reading content areas: literary experience (fiction analysis) and reading for information (finding evidence to support an arguments) (NEAP). Educators point to the “ubiquity of screens,” their incorporation into the classroom & increased use outside.
