Abstract
Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most prevalent hormonal disorder in women of reproductive age. Oligomenorrhea is the single most prevalent presenting complaint. Although obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and hirsutism, acne, and alopecia are frequently present in PCOS, the three key diagnostic criteria are hyperandrogenism, chronic anovulation, and polycystic ovaries on ultrasonography. Although conventional pharmacological protocols are abundant, the risks of potential serious side effects are many. More and more patients are requesting gentler, non-pharmacological alternatives that are safe and effective. Review of the literature for non-pharmacological approaches to PCOS management and possible reversal is investigated in this paper. The pros and cons of lifestyle modifications, stress management, counseling and nutritional and botanicalreatments are discussed and evaluated regarding their safety and efficacy in the treatment of PCOS, its symptoms and sequelae, without the use of pharmacological drugs. Natural treatment of PCOS may improve the parameters by which polycystic ovary syndrome is evaluated. LSM, stress management, counseling, neutraceuticals, and botanicals appear to be valuable methods. Further research, and particularly randomized controlled trials (RCTs), are needed.
