Description

On November 21, 1963 Black Muslim Minister Malcolm X gave an address titled "The Negro in America" to the UB community. The speaker was sponsored by the Student League for Human rights and was a test of a new open speaker policy implemented by the university administration. It followed an attempt in the previous year to invite Minister Malcolm X to address the UB community but had to be cancelled due to health issues. He spoke to approximately 1000 people in the Social room of the Student Center with another 300 people listening in the lobby. Following the address Chancellor James Halsey indicated that he was proud of the mature and intelligent manner of the conduct of those in attendance. The local media and many on campus reflected on the provacative nature of Minister X's address that called for a mass exodus of African-Americans back to Africa as the only viable option to address endemic discrimination and racism that Minister X indicated cannot be solved within American society.
