Abstract
Historical perspective-taking is a term that describes the explicit skills developed by students through instruction in history classrooms with a focus on the ability to contextualize historical actors, events, and issues. The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study is to develop a new measurement instrument in order to study high school students’ HPT skills. The Assessment of Historical Perspective-Taking (AHPT) instrument will use a cross sectional survey approach to assess of students’ HPT skills in a U S context. The practical goal of this research is to develop an instrument to measure students’ HPT skills and support history educators’ ability to assess historical perspective taking skills in a school setting in a U.S. history context; aligned with curricular and instructional procedures employed in schools in the United States. The instrument will measure historical perspective taking (HPT) skills through three associated sub-constructs.
