Abstract

Dental forensics is a field of limited participation by certified forensic odontologists. Single or mass fatality incidents require forensic experts from many different medical fields to participate in the identification process. The dental hygienist possesses the acquired educational knowledge and skillset to participate in the forensic identification process. The qualifications and usefulness of the dental hygienist in forensic identification events indicate the need for more curriculum involvement in forensics for students to be better prepared for such events if interested. The high level of interest to be involved in forensics calls for more research of larger target populations and academic involvement to better serve a growing need.
