Abstract

Carbon quantum dots hold great promise in the fields of agriculture and environmental engineering. In this project, they are used as biomarkers to determine how plants can communicate with each other via mycorrhizal connections (MC). One of the preliminary steps of this process is creating a detection protocol for the presence of carbon quantum dots (CQD) in plant material. We tested two separate dissolution protocols of plant ash to determine which gave the best UVVis spectrophotometry results. We discovered a clearer peak of CQD with HCI dissolution when compared to SDS dissolution. Given these results, we are proceeding forward with the HCI dissolution method.
