Abstract
This thesis compared Alateen members to Non-Alateen members without alcoholic parents to determine whether or not they endorse different attitudes and feelings toward alcohol and alcoholism; if a difference exists between the groups on degree of acknowledged personal alcohol consumption; and to form a description of Alateen members in Fairfield County, Connecticut based on demographic information including social status in the community. Subjects were 30 Alateen members (14 males and 16 females) with a mean age of 16.7 years (SD-1.97). Their average eduction level was 10.04 years (SD-3.39). The 30 adolescents without alcoholic parents (12 males and 18 females) mean age was 15.77 years (SD-l.70). They averaged 10.33 years of education (SD-l.08). Alateen members were administered questionnaires prior to an Alateen meeting. Adolescents without alcoholic parents completed the investigative instrument at the beginning of a class period at school. The results of the questionnaire suggested that the two groups have similar attitudes and feelings toward alcohol and alcoholism (measured by the Attitudes Toward Alcoholism Instrument; Tolor and Tamerin; 1975). Specifically, one of six t-tests was significant on the attitude scales (i.e. Alateen members were more socially rejecting of alcoholics, t=2.28,P<.025). In response to the Anonymous Questionnaire (designed by the investigator) Alateen members reported more concern (x^2=5.09, P,<025) about the amount of alcohol they drink and also drink more frequently (t=1.87, P<.05) than adolescents whose parents are not alcoholics. Alateen members are significantly (x^2=8.99, P<.01) less likely to have parents whose marriages are intact; their social status is not significantly different from adolescents without alcoholic parents; and the average number of months for belonging to Alateen was 11.77 (SD=13.57). It was concluded that this type of study may be useful to Alateen group leaders or educators to help focus on areas to discuss regarding alcohol and alcoholism.
