Abstract
Established in 1979 to develop standards that promote student learning and facilitate self-assessment for institutional effectiveness, the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) is comprised of representatives from over forty professional associations in higher education who are committed to high quality programs and services for students. Through a collaborative consensus-building process of creating standards and guidelines for program assessment and evaluation, CAS has created fifty sets of standards, including those for Learning Assistance Programs (LAPs) for academic support services. Considered the "gold standard" in higher education, the CAS standards are now widely used both on the national and international levels. On a cycle of review and revision, CAS standards are regularly updated and published. The compendium of standards in the CAS Professional Standards in Higher Education, 11th edition (CAS, 2023) has published all of the updated CAS standards and guidelines with their accompanying contextual statements in this new edition.
