Abstract
The oil price increases imposed upon world markets by the OPEC member states has had serious implications for both the industrialized and the developing countries. While the industrialized countries were able to weather the difficulty for the most part, the Third World slipped further into debt. The problems of these countries are many and their ability to create alternatives is not reassuring. Massive infusions of aid on concessionary terms is needed and a complete recovery from the recession in the West is a necessity. The recessionary drag on the Third World is evident and will be part of OPEC's legacy to them for some time to come.
