Abstract

The performance of the antibiotic industry is related to its market structure. The elements of market structure which are most important in their influence on performance are concentration, product differentiation, and market entry. The antibiotic industry is an example of a differentiated oligopoly. It has a relatively low cost of production, a high selling and distribution cost, and a relatively high return on sales and assets. The industry is competitive in the research and development of new and more effective products.
