Abstract
A comparative study of students' perceptions of school climate at the traditional high school versus the alternative high school in New Haven County. The primary purpose of this study was to compare students' perceptions of school climate at the traditional high school versus the alternative high school in New Haven Public Schools. Three hundred students comprised the overall sample for the study, and the generated sample collected was 243 (n = 243). The School Climate Survey (2002 High School Version, by Emmons, Haynes and Comer) was used to examine the following school climate variables at the two schools: school building, sharing of resources, order and discipline, parent involvement, student interpersonal relations, and student-teacher relations. The study found significant differences with respect to students' perceptions of order and discipline and school building between the traditional high and alternative high school. In addition, a significant interaction was found between grade level and school type in the area of student-teacher relationships. However, the study found no significant interaction between school type and gender or school type and ethnicity on any of the six school climate variables. Possible reasons for these findings include the uniquely supportive atmosphere fostered by administrators and teachers at the alternative high school, as well as a specific emphasis on mentoring.
