Item Oral Cancer Screening Habits Performed by Registered Dental Hygienists(2017-03-24) Genovese, Amanda; Ma, Mengyao; Taveras-Torres, Betsy; Wallitis, JessicaThe purpose of this study was to assess if registered dental hygienists perform thorough and complete extraoral and intraoral assessments for cancer detection through the use of palpation techniques, visualization and adjunctive screening devices. Our goal was to assess if these exams are being performed routinely and thoroughly, and if not, what possible barriers to regular exams may exist. This study will determine if registered dental hygienists perform thorough and complete extra oral and intra oral assessments for cancer detection. If there is a lack of performance of extra oral and intra oral assessments, it is essential to determine the barriers that are preventing the hygienist from performing them. This information will be generalizable to all RDH’s.Item Exploring Contributing Factors to Oral Health Disparities Seen Among Adult Immigrants(2017-03-24) Mathew, Priscilla; Lee, Yoonsun; Reis, TatianeThe objective of the research study was to help identify sociodemographics, socioeconomic status, and cultural barriers that may have been a contributing or limiting factor to immigrants’ oral health. Each of these factors were looked at closer by narrowing down possible subproblems among three immigrant social groups of Brazilian, Indian, and Korean ethnicities at the researchers’ respective local churches (4 in total). A total of one-hundred and forty-nine subjects (n=149) were involved in the research study.Item A Conceptualization of the Connecticut Dental Hygienists’ Experiences with Care Trends for the Medicaid Patient(2015-03-27) Miklos, SusanAccess to dental care for the Medicaid patient has traditionally been problematic. Published research studies document financial issues, time constraints and access challenges including treatment bias when delivering dental care to the Medicaid patient. Adult Medicaid patients experience even greater challenges (than children) when seeking dental care. An imbalance of care provided to adults versus children with Medicaid benefits is noted throughout the published literature. Obtaining oral health is a challenge for this Medicaid population. Research investigating dental Medicaid coverage and the payment environment for dental services is beneficial to the dental hygienist, to gain a better understanding of the oral health needs of this population and dental treatment modalities.Item Financial Management Practices and Attitudes of Dental Hygienists: A Descriptive Study(2011) Russell, Katherine; Stramoski, Sandra; Stramoski, Sandra; Russell, Katherine
